Frequently Asked Questions
MAXIMUM STYLE. MINIMUM EFFORT.
BY MM STYLING ACADEMY
WHAT EXPERIENCE DO I NEED?
You don't need any prior experience, just a love of style and clothes and a desire to run your own business on your own terms.
HOW DO I KNOW IF THIS COURSE IS RIGHT FOR ME?
The course is specifically designed for those who want to learn how to style real women and how to run a profitable styling business (think Gok Wan!). It is not a course for those wanting a career in high fashion model styling.
Where are the courses held?
The majority of courses are now held in our purpose built Styling Academy Studio in the small village of Manningford Bruce, Wiltshire. Only 7 Miles from Marlborough, 4 miles from Pewsey train station and plenty of car parking for all on site, it's more like a retreat than a teaching facility!
We also run various national courses throughout the year in large shopping centre locations such as London, Birmingham, Oxford, Reading, Bath & Cambridge
How much does the course cost?
The course costs £1400. We ask for a £500 deposit to secure your place with the remaining balance to be paid within 7 days of the course commencing. Payment plans are available so please ask. We understand that this is a big commitment but we have 100% faith in our ability to deliver the most comprehensive real woman styling course in the UK.
Can you help me with accommodation?
Of course! The Styling Academy has 3 beautifully styled bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, large kitchen, lounge area and uninterrupted country views.
All of the relevant information will be in your welcome pack.
What support will I receive after the course?
As part of the course price you'll have 1:1 access to Melissa Murrell at any mutually convenient time to ask any questions you like. Post the course you'll accompany Melissa on a client visit. We then recommend a 6 months review directly with Melissa to see how you're getting on.
How much can I expect to
earn as a stylist?
It depends on how many clients you do a week and how much you charge. Remember that your week will consist of client visits, preparation work and administration. A typical week would be 3-4 clients, £50 per hour and an average of 4-5 hours with each client. Your geographical location and your experience will also affect your hourly rate.
What backgrounds do people on the course have?
A lot of mums looking to change their career and work around school hours, some people have retail sales background, quite a few bloggers and more recently we had a fireman (or should that be fire-lady?) and a tax accountant! The main point is that everyone is welcome, whatever their background and everyone learns together.
Following the course how
quickly could I start working as a personal stylist?
In theory, you could start immediately but it's a little unrealistic to think you'll be making money straightaway. The best way to gain confidence and experience is to do free wardrobe edits - believe us, you'll never be short of volunteers. You'll also need to build a website or a social media presence (covered on the course). Most stylists start earning within 1-2 months of completing the course.
Does the course include how to run a personal styling business?
Yes, very much so. We cover everything from setting you up as self employed individual, how to register for tax, which marketing efforts work (and which don't), how to manage all your receipts, best practice filing systems, how to build your own website and much much more. There isn't anything we don't cover and by day 4 you'll have all the tools to start running a successful business.
What do I need to bring?
For most courses all you need is something to access the internet from - phone, iPad, laptop, we'll provide you with everything else.
Does the course include mens styling?
No, i'm afraid not. 99% of the personal styling clients are women and this is the sole focus of the course.
Why haven't you got a social media presence?
That's easy to answer; we're too busy teaching or styling personal clients to commit the time to social media.
